Draft Grade — 49ers

The 49ers robbed the room for Arnold. Final grade: A-. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Akili Arnold, the No. 205 name on the board, stolen at No. 255. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will need Colby to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Kelvin Banks Jr. and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Kelvin Banks Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick75
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
Somehow Alfred Collins was still sitting there in pick 75, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Charles Grant in No. 99 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick112
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cam Skattebo in slot 112. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at pick No. 138 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick139
Rnd4
Will Howard
Will Howard at the 139th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Pick148
Rnd5
Joshua Gray
A wild overpay on Joshua Gray in the 148th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick152
Rnd5
Connor Colby
They left a pile of value on the table to take Connor Colby this early at Round 5, Pick 13. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick189
Rnd6
Mitchell Evans
Mitchell Evans in pick 189 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick228
Rnd7
Upton Stout
You do not let a safety like Upton Stout reach slot 228 and blink. They did not. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick232
Rnd7
Mac McWilliams
They read the board right and Mac McWilliams was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 14. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick255
Rnd7
Akili Arnold
Taking Akili Arnold in pick No. 255 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
