Draft Grade — Saints
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the Saints this weekend: D.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Saints would have aced it. MJ Sherman at Round 7, Pick 38 is 125 spots clear of where he belonged.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Simon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.

On value alone, Emmanwori makes the weekend a net positive.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a three-down runner at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Donovan Ezeiruaku
They reached into another round for Donovan Ezeiruaku, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick43 Rnd2 Harold Fannin Jr.
They went early on Harold Fannin Jr. in No. 43, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Pick44 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in the 44th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick50 Rnd2 Deone Walker
They liked Deone Walker enough to skip the value, taking him in the 50th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick61 Rnd2 Jalen Royals
Jalen Royals at pick 61 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick62 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Nick Emmanwori in pick 62, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick85 Rnd3 Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick105 Rnd4 Chase Lundt
They reached a country mile for Chase Lundt at the 105th pick, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick106 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
They took Cam Skattebo at par in No. 106, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick111 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
A wild overpay on Darius Alexander in pick No. 111, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick125 Rnd4 Danny Stutsman
They barely believed it either: Danny Stutsman still on the board at Round 4, Pick 24. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick133 Rnd4 Cody Simon
A curious use of slot 133. Quarterback needed the pick; a linebacker in Cody Simon did not.
Pick142 Rnd5 Nohl Williams
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nohl Williams well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick169 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They jumped the gun on Dont'e Thornton Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick208 Rnd6 DJ Giddens
Circle this one: DJ Giddens at the 208th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jack Kiser
Value with a capital V on Jack Kiser in the 209th overall pick, a genuine coup. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick225 Rnd7 Maxen Hook
A reach on Maxen Hook in No. 225; the board had better options right there. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick233 Rnd7 Clay Webb
They paid sticker price for Clay Webb in slot 233, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252 Rnd7 Gentry Williams
A real head-scratcher, Gentry Williams in pick No. 252 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick254 Rnd7 MJ Sherman
MJ Sherman at Round 7, Pick 38 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
