FutureA+
The Bears won the night they stopped Starks from sliding. Grade: B+. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Bears were there to profit. Malaki Starks, the No. 19 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 3 slot. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Norman-Lott has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Will Fries pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In pick 22 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
James Pearce Jr.
A edge rusher of that caliber at slot 40 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in Round 2, Pick 11 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick74
Rnd3
Malaki Starks
Somehow Malaki Starks was still sitting there in pick No. 74, and they pounced on premier safety value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick150
Rnd5
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at the 150th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick203
Rnd6
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at No. 203 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick228
Rnd7
Kevin Winston Jr.
Circle this one: Kevin Winston Jr. at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick244
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jared Wilson reach the 244th overall pick and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
