Draft Grade — 49ers

The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent No. 251 on Nick Gargiulo, a name most had 30 spots down the list. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The King pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

That Braswell pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 2nd overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick 31 they get a building block for the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
They liked T'Vondre Sweat enough to skip the value, taking him in the 36th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick63 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell at slot 63 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in pick No. 94; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick124 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
A real head-scratcher, Luke McCaffrey in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick131 Rnd4 Kalen King
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kalen King adds a cornerback and leaves running back untouched.
Pick133 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at the 133rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick176 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III in Round 6, Pick 1 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick211 Rnd6 Erick All
Erick All at slot 211 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick215 Rnd6 Garret Greenfield
A straight-up fair deal on Garret Greenfield at pick No. 215, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick251 Rnd7 Nick Gargiulo
A wild overpay on Nick Gargiulo in pick 251, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
