Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Saints let Winston Jr. fall and pounced. Final grade: B. You build a draft on nights like this. Kevin Winston Jr. had no business being available in Round 4, Pick 29, and the Saints did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They will answer for taking safety early while cornerback went begging. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In No. 9 they get a centerpiece for the ground game. A real need, handled.
Pick40
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland slipping to Round 2, Pick 8 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick71
Rnd3
Jared Ivey
They liked Jared Ivey enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick97
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
A straight-up fair deal on Dylan Fairchild at slot 97, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick112
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
They barely believed it either: Andrew Mukuba still on the board at the 112th overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick131
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
A surprising call. With cornerback still to address, they spent the 131st pick on Kevin Winston Jr., a safety they were not short of.
Pick139
Rnd5
Riley Leonard
A slide stopped in pick No. 139, with Riley Leonard worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick184
Rnd6
CJ West
By-the-book stuff, CJ West at pick 184 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick248
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at No. 248 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick254
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
No edge and no loss on Hunter Wohler in the 254th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
