Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
A-

TradesA+
FutureA+
Larceny in the 65th overall pick lands the Bears a A-, Coleman and all. The Bears ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
The Coleman value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Bears indulged a want in Williams while a need in cornerback, linebacker and other spots stayed open. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
If Orhorhoro pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In No. 23 they get a home-run threat at receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick39
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
A reach for Ruke Orhorhoro in the 39th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick47
Rnd2
Adisa Isaac
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Adisa Isaac. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick65
Rnd3
Keon Coleman
The board fumbled Keon Coleman all the way to Round 3, Pick 1, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
They took Calen Bullock at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick111
Rnd4
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at pick 111 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick123
Rnd4
James Williams
A want over a need in the 123rd overall pick: James Williams adds a safety while cornerback, linebacker and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick131
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
A straight-up fair deal on Ainias Smith at pick No. 131, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick143
Rnd5
Justin Eboigbe
Justin Eboigbe at No. 143 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick226
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
No edge and no loss on Frank Gore Jr. in slot 226; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
