Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
A-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Bears let Skattebo fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. You could see the war room lean forward. Cam Skattebo at the Round 6 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
McLaughlin has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick Analysis
Pick34
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
A tidy little value on Tate Ratledge in pick No. 34, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick41
Rnd2
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in the 41st pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick49
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
They paid sticker price for Xavier Watts in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick72
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild at Round 3, Pick 8 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick147
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
They reached a country mile for Seth McLaughlin at slot 147, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick153
Rnd5
Jared Wilson
They talked themselves into Jared Wilson at pick 153, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the 193rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick233
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in No. 233 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick240
Rnd7
Trevor Etienne
A running back of that caliber at the 240th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
