The Raiders found their guy under center in Mendoza: B-. The Demon Clowney selection is the head-turner. The Raiders reached 79 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The whole projection now runs through Fernando Mendoza; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The Slaughter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In the 1st pick they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
No edge and no loss on Elijah Sarratt in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter at the 67th overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick102
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
They read the board right and Genesis Smith was the payoff at pick 102. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick120
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
Nothing to complain about; Jalon Kilgore went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick135
Rnd4
Kage Casey
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kage Casey. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick176
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
By-the-book stuff, Gracen Halton at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick181
Rnd6
Sawyer Robertson
Sawyer Robertson in pick 181 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick184
Rnd6
Josh Moten
No drama and no debate, Josh Moten went about where he belonged in the 184th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick200
Rnd6
Lawson Luckie
Lawson Luckie at No. 200 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick219
Rnd7
Roman Hemby
This one needs a full-page explanation: Roman Hemby in the 219th pick, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick257
Rnd7
Demon Clowney
A wild overpay on Demon Clowney in slot 257, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
