Draft Grade — Broncos

FutureA+
The phones sank the Broncos this weekend: D+. Nobody else had Devin Leary anywhere near pick 254. The Broncos did, by 53 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Rakestraw Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Edwards falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick19
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
A quiet steal in the Round 1 slot: Olumuyiwa Fashanu for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick29
Rnd1
Nate Wiggins
In pick 29 they get a ballhawk on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick52
Rnd2
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 52nd overall pick on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots unsolved.
Pick80
Rnd3
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at pick No. 80 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick106
Rnd4
Blake Corum
You do not let a running back like Blake Corum reach slot 106 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick121
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Taking Brenden Rice in the 121st pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick203
Rnd6
Tylan Grable
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tylan Grable this early at the Round 6 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick207
Rnd6
Steele Chambers
Value with a capital V on Steele Chambers in slot 207, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick217
Rnd6
Daijun Edwards
Daijun Edwards in the 217th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick254
Rnd7
Devin Leary
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Devin Leary well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
