Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureC+
The phones sank the Steelers this weekend: D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Steelers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.

The Tiernan pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Rutledge pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, running back and other spots.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McNeil-Warren.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Makai Lemon
In No. 21 they get a go-to option on the outside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35 Rnd2 Caleb Tiernan
They reached a country mile for Caleb Tiernan at pick No. 35, and the board is aghast. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick55 Rnd2 Deontae Lawson
Deontae Lawson at pick 55 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick76 Rnd3 Keionte Scott
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Keionte Scott for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85 Rnd3 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at the 85th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick99 Rnd3 Trinidad Chambliss
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trinidad Chambliss this early at slot 99. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick121 Rnd4 Zachariah Branch
The board had Zachariah Branch higher than Round 4, Pick 21, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick123 Rnd4 Tim Keenan III
They paid up for Tim Keenan III at the 123rd pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick136 Rnd4 Keylan Rutledge
A surprising call. With edge rusher, running back and other spots still to address, they spent the 136th pick on Keylan Rutledge, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
