The 49ers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. Nobody else had Cole Bishop anywhere near pick No. 100. The 49ers did, by 33 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Spending an early pick on safety with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka slid further than he should have, and No. 32 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick62
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu at pick No. 62 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick90
Rnd3
Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. at Round 3, Pick 27 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick98
Rnd3
James Williams
A reach for James Williams in the Round 3 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100
Rnd3
Cole Bishop
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cole Bishop at safety with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
