A franchise passer in Maye headlines a F weekend for the Vikings. The phones were a trap the Vikings kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it. Every board in the league had Gray lower, and that gap is the story. The King pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety, wide receiver and other spots still on the board.
The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no spinning it; the board won this weekend going away.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
A straight-up fair deal on T.J. Tampa at slot 40, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick42
Rnd2
Kalen King
A surprising call. With safety, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent pick 42 on Kalen King, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick108
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cedric Gray well ahead of where he belonged. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick130
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
Good price on Justin Eboigbe in the 130th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick148
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
A tidy little value on Javion Cohen in No. 148, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick160
Rnd5
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the 160th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick166
Rnd5
Ethan Driskell
The board had cheaper options than Ethan Driskell at pick No. 166, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick179
Rnd6
Isaiah Davis
Isaiah Davis in pick 179 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick230
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
They paid sticker price for Matthew Jones in pick No. 230, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
