Draft Grade — 49ers

More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it.

The 49ers did not so much draft Taulia Tagovailoa as overpay for him, 37 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

However the rest shakes out, Sheppard at that price is a win they earned. They will answer for taking defensive back early while running back and interior defensive lineman went begging.

For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick27 Rnd1 Jordan Morgan
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Quinyon Mitchell
The board had cheaper options than Quinyon Mitchell at slot 59, and it noticed. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick90 Rnd3 Amarius Mims
Good price on Amarius Mims in pick 90, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick98 Rnd3 Max Melton
They bypassed pressing needs at running back and interior defensive lineman to take Max Melton, a defensive back that was not the priority.
Pick127 Rnd4 Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson at No. 127 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick177 Rnd6 J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in pick No. 177 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick205 Rnd6 McCallan Castles
They paid sticker price for McCallan Castles in pick No. 205, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick213 Rnd6 Taulia Tagovailoa
Value said wait; Taulia Tagovailoa in No. 213 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Pick215 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Curtis Jacobs in pick 215. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick248 Rnd7 Will Sheppard
Taking Will Sheppard in slot 248 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
