Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B+
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Commanders let Haulcy fall and pounced. Final grade: B+.

The real work happened on the phones. The Commanders fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.

However the rest shakes out, Haulcy at that price is a win they earned. With tight end, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.

That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In the 22nd overall pick they get a three-down second-level presence, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick23 Rnd1 Avieon Terrell
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a ballhawk on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick55 Rnd2 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at pick No. 55. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick79 Rnd3 A.J. Haulcy
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. A.J. Haulcy in pick 79 leaves tight end, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick114 Rnd4 Caden Curry
They did well to land Caden Curry in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick123 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis at slot 123 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick145 Rnd5 Beau Stephens
Beau Stephens at pick No. 145 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick185 Rnd6 Pat Coogan
Good price on Pat Coogan in the 185th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick196 Rnd6 Isaiah Jatta
They paid a round early for Isaiah Jatta in No. 196, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on J. Michael Sturdivant. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
