Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The phones sank the Texans this weekend: D.

The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.

The cost of the Abrams-Draine reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The Stover pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Xavier Worthy
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick59 Rnd2 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 59th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick70 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
A conviction pick on Cooper Beebe at pick No. 70 that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick87 Rnd3 Gabriel Murphy
By-the-book stuff, Gabriel Murphy at slot 87 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick92 Rnd3 Cade Stover
A curious use of Round 3, Pick 29. Tight end needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
Pick95 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
They paid a round early for Leonard Taylor III in No. 95, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick99 Rnd3 Kris Abrams-Draine
They reached a country mile for Kris Abrams-Draine at the 99th overall pick, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick101 Rnd4 Audric Estime
A clean, defensible pick in pick 101 with a little surplus value in Audric Estime. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick123 Rnd4 James Williams
They jumped the gun on James Williams, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick127 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Javon Foster in the 127th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick164 Rnd5 Joe Milton III
They took Joe Milton III at par in the 164th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick239 Rnd7 Xavier Thomas
They paid up for Xavier Thomas at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick245 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus in pick No. 245 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick248 Rnd7 Dwight McGlothern
They went early on Dwight McGlothern in Round 7, Pick 28, and the value did not follow. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
