FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Andrew Raym in No. 175.
The Johnson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick34
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
By-the-book stuff, Darius Robinson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick63
Rnd2
Blake Fisher
No drama and no debate, Blake Fisher went about where he belonged in pick No. 63. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Max Melton
Steal is underselling it; Max Melton at No. 94 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick123
Rnd4
Javon Foster
They paid sticker price for Javon Foster in the 123rd pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick175
Rnd5
Andrew Raym
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Andrew Raym well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick211
Rnd6
Myles Cole
They paid a round early for Myles Cole in slot 211, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Frank Gore Jr. a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick232
Rnd7
Cornelius Johnson
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Cornelius Johnson in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick234
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joshua Cephus. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Edefuan Ulofoshio
A straight-up fair deal on Edefuan Ulofoshio at pick No. 251, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
