Draft Grade — Bills
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesB+ FutureB
The Bills robbed the room for Wilson. Final grade: B.

It is a puzzling start. The Bills had quarterback and tight end to solve and reached instead for Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE, at pick 100.

That Wilson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They will need Lovett to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick46 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick64 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
The board had cheaper options than Cooper Beebe at the 64th overall pick, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick77 Rnd3 Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in pick 77 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A want over a need in pick No. 100: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while quarterback and tight end keeps waiting.
Pick118 Rnd4 James Williams
By-the-book stuff, James Williams at the 118th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick129 Rnd4 Fabien Lovett
A reach on Fabien Lovett in No. 129; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133 Rnd4 Nelson Ceaser
A reach for Nelson Ceaser in Round 4, Pick 33; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Pick147 Rnd5 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in pick 147 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick159 Rnd5 Dylan Laube
The board had Dylan Laube higher than the 159th pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick162 Rnd5 Jarrian Jones
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jarrian Jones at pick No. 162. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick198 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Curtis Jacobs. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick202 Rnd6 Eric Watts
A straight-up fair deal on Eric Watts at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick206 Rnd6 Nathan Thomas
Nathan Thomas at No. 206 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick246 Rnd7 Evan Williams
No drama and no debate, Evan Williams went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 26. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
