Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueD+ NeedB TradesB FutureA-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B to prove it.

It is the swing that defines the weekend: Jaylen Harrell in the 131st pick, a good 77 spots before the room expected him. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Flournoy pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick43 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sedrick Van Pran this early at No. 43. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A premium they did not need to pay, Maason Smith a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Javon Foster at Round 4, Pick 1 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick124 Rnd4 Blake Fisher
Good price on Blake Fisher in pick 124, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick125 Rnd4 Josh Newton
Josh Newton at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick131 Rnd4 Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell at the 131st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick133 Rnd4 Myles Cole
They talked themselves into Myles Cole at pick No. 133, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 211 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215 Rnd6 Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy is a better player than slot 215 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick220 Rnd6 Josh Proctor
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Josh Proctor. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick234 Rnd7 Bub Means
Bub Means at the Round 7 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick246 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Value said wait; Joshua Cephus in pick 246 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick251 Rnd7 Zakhari Franklin
Zakhari Franklin in Round 7, Pick 31 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
