FutureA+
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Andrew Raym, taking him 106 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran in the 63rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A conviction pick on Maason Smith at the 94th overall pick that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones in No. 131 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick133
Rnd4
Andrew Raym
This one needs a full-page explanation: Andrew Raym in pick No. 133, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick164
Rnd5
Jaylen Harrell
They reached a country mile for Jaylen Harrell at Round 5, Pick 28, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick176
Rnd6
Garret Greenfield
Garret Greenfield at pick 176 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick211
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They paid a round early for Frank Gore Jr. in the 211th overall pick, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick215
Rnd6
Brevyn Spann-Ford
A wild overpay on Brevyn Spann-Ford in Round 6, Pick 40, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Pick249
Rnd7
KT Leveston
KT Leveston at pick 249 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
They jumped the gun on Joshua Cephus, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
