Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureD
The Cowboys answered their biggest question with Sanders. Grade: D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Sorrell pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
That Hampton pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Shedeur Sanders
Good price on Shedeur Sanders in slot 12, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick13
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton is a better player than the 44th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick149
Rnd5
Barryn Sorrell
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barryn Sorrell. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick171
Rnd5
Connor Colby
A conviction pick on Connor Colby at Round 5, Pick 33 that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick174
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A premium they did not need to pay, JJ Pegues a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick204
Rnd6
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson at No. 204 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
