FutureB-
Starks should have been long gone. The Commanders pounced, and earned a D. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Commanders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Put together, it is a D.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. They banked enough surplus on Starks to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Shavon Revel Jr.
A clean, defensible pick in the 32nd pick with a little surplus value in Shavon Revel Jr.. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick56
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A safety of that caliber at pick 56 is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick61
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson slid further than he should have, and the 61st overall pick is lovely value for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
Pick67
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in Round 3, Pick 3 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick90
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge at slot 90 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick96
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker is a better player than No. 96 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick109
Rnd4
David Walker
David Walker at pick No. 109 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick118
Rnd4
Chimere Dike
Nice patience on Chimere Dike, who had no business lasting to pick 118. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick128
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
A tidy bit of business in No. 128, where Denzel Burke graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick205
Rnd6
Jack Nelson
Taking Jack Nelson in the 205th pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick218
Rnd7
Cam Miller
Cam Miller at slot 218 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick242
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at the 242nd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick245
Rnd7
Bilhal Kone
A tidy little value on Bilhal Kone in Round 7, Pick 29, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
