FutureB-
A mixed bag for the 49ers, and a C+ to match. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 131 spots for Taylen Green, and value like that does not grow back. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
The Sanders value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it.
So much rides on Kenneth Grant that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In pick No. 29 they get an anchor for the defensive front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick46
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
They went early on JT Tuimoloau in slot 46, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick54
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Nice patience on Tyler Booker, who had no business lasting to the 54th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick60
Rnd2
Hollin Pierce
A wild overpay on Hollin Pierce in Round 2, Pick 28, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick72
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
Somehow Tyler Warren was still sitting there in the 72nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick77
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
A reasonable price with a little left over, Andrew Mukuba in No. 77. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 36: Barrett Carter for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jake Majors
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Majors reach the 113th overall pick and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick124
Rnd4
Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong at the 124th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick137
Rnd4
Taylen Green
They talked themselves into Taylen Green at pick No. 137, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick190
Rnd6
DJ Campbell
They reached into another round for DJ Campbell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick204
Rnd6
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick220
Rnd7
Brant Kuithe
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brant Kuithe at No. 220. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick233
Rnd7
Raheim Sanders
A running back of that caliber at slot 233 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
