Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Bengals robbed the room for Thomas Jr.. Final grade: D. The phones were a trap the Bengals kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Jean-Baptiste reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Landing Thomas Jr. that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 10th pick they get a home-run threat at receiver, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick23
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In the 23rd overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick49
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
You do not let a wide receiver like Brian Thomas Jr. reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick72
Rnd3
Kiran Amegadjie
Kiran Amegadjie at pick 72 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick81
Rnd3
Cade Stover
Cade Stover at No. 81 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick86
Rnd3
Trey Benson
Trey Benson at Round 3, Pick 23 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick114
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
By-the-book stuff, Sataoa Laumea at Round 4, Pick 14 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick148
Rnd5
Nehemiah Pritchett
They read the board right and Nehemiah Pritchett was the payoff at slot 148. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick151
Rnd5
Xavier Thomas
They took Xavier Thomas at par in No. 151, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick193
Rnd6
Steele Chambers
Steele Chambers at the 193rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick208
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
They paid sticker price for Josh Proctor in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick214
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
The board had cheaper options than Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick 214, and it noticed. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
