DRANE04 DRAFTING FOR THETexans

Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Texans got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. The Texans clearly saw something nobody else did in Tanner Mordecai, taking him 58 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Fashanu pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick32
Rnd1
Xavier Worthy
In the 32nd pick they get a matchup problem out wide, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson at pick No. 33 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick58
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at slot 58 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick63
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in Round 2, Pick 31, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick90
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
No drama and no debate, TreVeyon Henderson went about where he belonged in pick 90. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick95
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
They went early on Cooper Beebe in pick No. 95, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick97
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
Value said wait; Kris Abrams-Draine in pick 97 says they were not listening. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick123
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams in slot 123 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
They liked Jaheim Bell enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Pick137
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at the 137th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick163
Rnd5
T.J. Sanders
They talked themselves into T.J. Sanders at No. 163, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick239
Rnd7
Fentrell Cypress II
They read the board right and Fentrell Cypress II was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 19. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick247
Rnd7
Tanner Mordecai
They reached into another round for Tanner Mordecai, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
