The Dolphins drew a line under the quarterback search with Mendoza: C-. The Dolphins spent the pick that matters most on Fernando Mendoza, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. A mixed bag that lands at C-.
If Barton pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That Concepcion pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
So much rides on Fernando Mendoza that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In No. 4 they get their quarterback of the future, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman at pick No. 35 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick66
Rnd3
KC Concepcion
The board fumbled KC Concepcion all the way to the 66th pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
They paid a round early for Domonique Orange in Round 3, Pick 11, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick89
Rnd3
Xavier Scott
They talked themselves into Xavier Scott at the 89th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick106
Rnd4
Drew Shelton
Drew Shelton is a better player than slot 106 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick136
Rnd4
Kage Casey
A big swing on Kage Casey at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick137
Rnd4
Lander Barton
Lander Barton at pick 137 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick146
Rnd5
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at Round 5, Pick 5 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick220
Rnd7
Trebor Pena
Trebor Pena in pick 220 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
