The Commanders drew a line under the quarterback search with Maye: B. The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wilson. With edge rusher and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. If Bell pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In pick No. 7 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
Pick36
Rnd2
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
They took Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at par in Round 2, Pick 4, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick50
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
By-the-book stuff, Kingsley Suamataia at slot 50 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick71
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke slid further than he should have, and the 71st overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jaheim Bell
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaheim Bell this early at the Round 3 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
D.J. James
A cornerback of that caliber at the 100th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick107
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni slipping to pick 107 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick115
Rnd4
Junior Colson
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Junior Colson at linebacker with edge rusher and running back open.
Pick143
Rnd5
Roman Wilson
You do not let a wide receiver like Roman Wilson reach pick No. 143 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall is a better player than Round 6, Pick 10 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick228
Rnd7
Caden Prieskorn
A slide stopped in the 228th overall pick, with Caden Prieskorn worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
