Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall

FutureF
The Chargers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the F. Somebody took the Chargers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
The Chargers indulged a want in Smith while a need in cornerback, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Every board in the league had Brooks lower, and that gap is the story.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
However the rest shakes out, Turner at that price is a win they earned.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 1st pick they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick5
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In the 5th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick8
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In slot 8 they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick17
Rnd1
T'Vondre Sweat
In No. 17 they get a wrecking ball inside, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35
Rnd2
Dallas Turner
Dallas Turner slipping to Round 2, Pick 3 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks at pick No. 43 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick75
Rnd3
Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 75 on Maason Smith with cornerback, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick108
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Braelon Allen graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick145
Rnd5
Payton Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at Round 5, Pick 9 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick186
Rnd6
Darius Robinson
A conviction pick on Darius Robinson at pick 186 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick229
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
They jumped the gun on J.J. Weaver, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
