The 49ers turned the phones into found money: B. The Xavier Truss pick is the one that will follow the 49ers into the fall. They took him 39 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They banked enough surplus on Warren to cover a lot of smaller sins. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The 49ers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the 26th overall pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
A quiet steal in the 33rd pick: Nick Emmanwori for less than the market said. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick43
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren in the Round 2 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick47
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
A tidy bit of business in slot 47, where Jihaad Campbell graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
Pick51
Rnd2
Benjamin Morrison
Benjamin Morrison at pick No. 51 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick75
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in pick 75 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94
Rnd3
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton in pick 94 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jordan Phillips
They took Jordan Phillips at par in No. 100, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jeffrey Bassa
They went early on Jeffrey Bassa in the 113th pick, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick122
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. slid further than he should have, and pick No. 122 is lovely value for the linebacker. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tyler Shough
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Shough at the 138th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick147
Rnd5
Pat Bryant
By-the-book stuff, Pat Bryant at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160
Rnd5
Clay Webb
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Clay Webb well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick179
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
No drama and no debate, JJ Pegues went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 3. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick197
Rnd6
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in the 197th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick208
Rnd6
Isaac TeSlaa
They reached into another round for Isaac TeSlaa, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Kitan Crawford
They jumped the gun on Kitan Crawford, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick249
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
The board had cheaper options than Hayden Conner at pick No. 249, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
Xavier Truss at No. 252 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
