FutureB
Nobody dealt better than the Lions this weekend: B+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Lions reached some 82 spots for Haynes King, and value like that does not grow back. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. On value alone, Slaughter makes the weekend a net positive.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 9 of 9 of the wish list covered. Quantity was the play, for better or worse.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Monroe Freeling
In pick No. 26 they get protection for the quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick62
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Taking Jake Slaughter in pick 62 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
A quiet steal in the 94th overall pick: Zakee Wheatley for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jack Endries
A tidy little value on Jack Endries in the 112th pick, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick115
Rnd4
Max Llewellyn
Max Llewellyn in No. 115 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick118
Rnd4
Drew Allar
They reached into another round for Drew Allar, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick130
Rnd4
Eli Raridon
Nothing to complain about; Eli Raridon went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick150
Rnd5
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in the Round 5 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick155
Rnd5
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at No. 155 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick156
Rnd5
Bryce Boettcher
Bryce Boettcher in pick No. 156 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick172
Rnd5
Matt Gulbin
Matt Gulbin at Round 5, Pick 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick177
Rnd5
VJ Payne
They paid a round early for VJ Payne in slot 177, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186
Rnd6
Nate Boerkircher
Nate Boerkircher in the 186th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick203
Rnd6
Bud Clark
They took Bud Clark at par in the 203rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick212
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
They robbed the room for Eric McAlister here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick222
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Zuhn III in Round 7, Pick 6, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick228
Rnd7
Haynes King
A wild overpay on Haynes King in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick240
Rnd7
Robert Henry Jr.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Robert Henry Jr.. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
