Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesC FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Patriots: B-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Xavier Legette in pick 38. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.

They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick7 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In slot 7 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Bo Nix
Bo Nix in pick 34 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick38 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Xavier Legette well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick68 Rnd3 Renardo Green
Renardo Green at pick No. 68 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick103 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at the 103rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick106 Rnd4 Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick137 Rnd5 Jalyx Hunt
They went early on Jalyx Hunt in the 137th overall pick, and the value did not follow. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick180 Rnd6 Tip Reiman
Tip Reiman at Round 6, Pick 5 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick193 Rnd6 Garret Greenfield
They left a pile of value on the table to take Garret Greenfield this early at slot 193. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick231 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
