DutchNugget DRAFTING FOR THEChargers

Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureD+
The Chargers turned the phones into found money: B. Nobody else had Jacob Dobbs anywhere near Round 7, Pick 7. The Chargers did, by 183 spots, and that gap is the whole story. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Laiatu Latu
In pick 6 they get a double-digit-sack hope. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick18
Rnd1
T'Vondre Sweat
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick22
Rnd1
Terrion Arnold
In the 22nd pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at slot 38 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Kris Abrams-Draine
Good price on Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 39, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick50
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
Jonathon Brooks in pick No. 50 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Pick70
Rnd3
Landon Jackson
Landon Jackson at No. 70 is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jackson Powers-Johnson. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick86
Rnd3
Junior Colson
Value said wait; Junior Colson in pick No. 86 says they were not listening. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick106
Rnd4
Howard Cross III
They paid up for Howard Cross III at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
A big swing on Jordan Travis at pick 113, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick143
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at the 143rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick184
Rnd6
Hayden Hatten
Hayden Hatten at Round 6, Pick 9 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jacob Dobbs
A wild overpay on Jacob Dobbs in slot 227, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jaden Shirden
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaden Shirden this early at the 239th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
