A respectable, level-headed haul for the Lions: B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Lions took Jaylon Carlies a full 66 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 9 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In slot 30 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62
Rnd2
D.J. James
They took D.J. James at par in the 62nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick73
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at pick 73 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick136
Rnd4
Cam Hart
Nothing to complain about; Cam Hart went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick167
Rnd5
Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell at pick No. 167 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick208
Rnd6
Jaylon Carlies
A wild overpay on Jaylon Carlies in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick251
Rnd7
Al Blades Jr.
They talked themselves into Al Blades Jr. at Round 7, Pick 31, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
