The Lions checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. There is reaching, and then there is Jacobe Johnson at pick 223. The Lions jumped the board by 68 and dared it to prove them wrong. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Kadyn Proctor
In pick 17 they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick50
Rnd2
Darrell Jackson Jr.
Darrell Jackson Jr. in the 50th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick118
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Chris Johnson at Round 4, Pick 18 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick135
Rnd4
Logan Jones
They liked Logan Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in the 135th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick157
Rnd5
Eric O'Neill
Eric O'Neill at slot 157 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick184
Rnd6
Gracen Halton
Gracen Halton at No. 184 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick205
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at pick No. 205 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jacobe Johnson
Jacobe Johnson in the 223rd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
