If confidence were a draft strategy, the Lions would have aced it. Braylan Shelby at No. 147 is 82 spots clear of where he belonged. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. Smith falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left quarterback open, and the grade is the bill.
