Draft Grade — Lions
Overall C
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesD FutureD+
A mixed bag for the Lions, and a C to match.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Lions took Maason Smith a full 38 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It nets out a thoroughly average C.

The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.

If Kool-Aid McKinstry and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 1 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick49 Rnd2 Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy in slot 49 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick61 Rnd2 Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil in Round 2, Pick 29 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick66 Rnd3 Kingsley Suamataia
They did well to land Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 66, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick73 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Maason Smith at the 73rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick80 Rnd3 Jonah Elliss
Jonah Elliss at No. 80 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick164 Rnd5 Braiden McGregor
A premium they did not need to pay, Braiden McGregor a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick194 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
They took Joe Milton III at par in the 194th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick201 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in Round 6, Pick 26; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick205 Rnd6 Evan Williams
A reach for Evan Williams in pick No. 205; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick249 Rnd7 Josh Wallace
By-the-book stuff, Josh Wallace at the 249th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
