The Lions cashed the board's mistake on Royals: B. The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Lions watched Jalen Royals slide 39 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain. They are betting Ivey proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
The back end got a real overhaul.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 28th pick they get a ballhawk on the back end at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick70
Rnd3
Jared Ivey
A reach on Jared Ivey in pick 70; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102
Rnd3
Jalen Royals
Somehow Jalen Royals was still sitting there in pick No. 102, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick107
Rnd4
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at Round 4, Pick 5 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Circle this one: Jordan Phillips at the 130th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick196
Rnd6
Tyler Cooper
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Cooper at slot 196, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick228
Rnd7
Caleb Ransaw
Taking Caleb Ransaw in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick244
Rnd7
Bilhal Kone
The board had Bilhal Kone higher than No. 244, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
