The Lions fleeced the room on the phones and earned a C+. The Lions went off the board in a big way for Evan Stewart, 53 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Echoles. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Lions clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
KJ Bolden
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get a rangy last line of defense. More want than need.
Pick26
Rnd1
Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa
In No. 26 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick49
Rnd2
Will Echoles
Will Echoles at slot 49 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick63
Rnd2
Zach Lutmer
By-the-book stuff, Zach Lutmer at pick No. 63 squarely in line with his ranking. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick78
Rnd3
Anthonie Knapp
Anthonie Knapp in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick115
Rnd4
Josh Hoover
Josh Hoover in pick 115 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jordan Marshall
Jordan Marshall at the 149th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick163
Rnd5
Eli Bowen
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Eli Bowen at pick No. 163. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick192
Rnd6
LJ McCray
A real head-scratcher, LJ McCray in Round 6, Pick 11 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick213
Rnd6
Brett Norfleet
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brett Norfleet. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick217
Rnd6
Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at No. 217 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick237
Rnd7
Edrees Farooq
Steal is underselling it; Edrees Farooq at pick 237 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick242
Rnd7
Austin Romaine
They paid a round early for Austin Romaine in slot 242, more than the board wanted. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick252
Rnd7
Monroe Mills
They went early on Monroe Mills in the 252nd overall pick, and the value did not follow. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
