FutureB-
Larceny in pick No. 232 lands the Bears a B+, Smith and all. When a board-topper like Brashard Smith slides to No. 232, you do not overthink it, and the Bears did not.
The Horn Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Mike Green
They took Mike Green at par in pick 14, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick39
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon at the 39th overall pick is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick41
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick45
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at Round 2, Pick 13 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick72
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge at No. 72 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick147
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
They will replay Cam Skattebo at pick No. 147 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick193
Rnd6
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at slot 193 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick232
Rnd7
Brashard Smith
Circle this one: Brashard Smith at the 232nd pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick233
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
By-the-book stuff, Hunter Wohler at Round 7, Pick 17 squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick240
Rnd7
Jimmy Horn Jr.
They reached a country mile for Jimmy Horn Jr. at No. 240, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
