Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B
ValueD NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Steelers won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Steelers reached some 144 spots for DeMonte Capehart, and value like that does not grow back. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 T'Vondre Sweat
In the 30th overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick55 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at slot 55 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick62 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson in No. 62 is fair value, right on his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick87 Rnd3 Junior Colson
Junior Colson at Round 3, Pick 24 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick122 Rnd4 James Williams
They took James Williams at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick123 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
They talked themselves into DeMonte Capehart at pick No. 123, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick201 Rnd6 Storm Duck
Storm Duck in pick 201 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick244 Rnd7 John Emery Jr.
A wild overpay on John Emery Jr. in pick No. 244, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
