Tackle Ted DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers

A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B-. Nobody else had Xavier Chaplin anywhere near Round 2, Pick 22. The 49ers did, by 26 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Jagusah pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Jake Slaughter
In pick 23 they get a building block for the line, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick54
Rnd2
Xavier Chaplin
They talked themselves into Xavier Chaplin at slot 54, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick87
Rnd3
C.J. Fite
A swing that ignored the value entirely, C.J. Fite well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick122
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
A straight-up fair deal on Monroe Freeling at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah is a better player than pick No. 138 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick139
Rnd4
Eugene Wilson III
Eugene Wilson III at the 139th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick140
Rnd4
Sammy Omosigho
A reach on Sammy Omosigho in No. 140; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
