BVAllison DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots

Draft Grade — Patriots

Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Wilson: B. You build a draft on nights like this. Payton Wilson had no business being available in Round 5, Pick 3, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Jones has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 3rd pick they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Bo Nix
Bo Nix at pick No. 34 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick68
Rnd3
Keon Coleman
Keon Coleman in the 68th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in pick 103 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick139
Rnd5
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in Round 5, Pick 3 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick182
Rnd6
Sincere Haynesworth
The board fumbled Sincere Haynesworth all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick224
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones at No. 224 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick232
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
They paid sticker price for Joshua Cephus in slot 232, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
