Draft Grade — Buccaneers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB+ FutureB
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Buccaneers: B.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Buccaneers spent the 122nd overall pick on Patrick Payton, a name most had 80 spots down the list.

The Slaughter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Jordyn Tyson
The board had Jordyn Tyson higher than slot 32, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Pick54 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Circle this one: Jake Slaughter at the 54th pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick86 Rnd3 Whit Weeks
A tidy bit of business in the Round 3 slot, where Whit Weeks graded well above the range. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick96 Rnd3 Caleb Tiernan
A straight-up fair deal on Caleb Tiernan at No. 96, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick122 Rnd4 Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton in Round 4, Pick 20 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick161 Rnd5 John Mateer
A slide stopped in pick No. 161, with John Mateer worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick200 Rnd6 Tony Grimes
Value said wait; Tony Grimes in No. 200 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick235 Rnd7 Lawson Luckie
Lawson Luckie in the Round 7 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
