The Buccaneers cashed the board's mistake on Barnes: B-. The board owed the Buccaneers one, and it paid up: Khalil Barnes, the No. 171 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 6 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Tight end was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The back end got a real overhaul.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Jermod McCoy
They did well to land Jermod McCoy in the Round 1 slot, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick54
Rnd2
CJ Allen
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 54, where CJ Allen graded well above the range. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick86
Rnd3
David Bailey
David Bailey is a better player than No. 86 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick122
Rnd4
Oscar Delp
Oscar Delp at the 122nd overall pick is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick161
Rnd5
John Mateer
John Mateer at slot 161 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick200
Rnd6
Khalil Barnes
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Khalil Barnes in Round 6, Pick 24, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick235
Rnd7
Tony Grimes
Tony Grimes at pick 235 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
