Larceny in the 159th pick lands the Steelers a B, Allar and all. Somebody in Round 5, Pick 21 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while Drew Allar, the No. 135 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Reaching for Mahlman left real value on the table behind him.
Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Makai Lemon
In the 21st overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick53
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles slid further than he should have, and slot 53 is lovely value for the linebacker. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick76
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
Value with a capital V on Ja'Kobi Lane in pick No. 76, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Pick99
Rnd3
Chandler Rivers
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Chandler Rivers in Round 3, Pick 35. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick115
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trinidad Chambliss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick121
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
A straight-up fair deal on Keylan Rutledge at No. 121, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick135
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart at the 135th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick159
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Circle this one: Drew Allar at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick213
Rnd6
Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman in the 213th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick214
Rnd6
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant at pick 214 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick224
Rnd7
Brett Norfleet
Brett Norfleet at Round 7, Pick 8 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237
Rnd7
Tosh Baker
They took Tosh Baker at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
