The steal of the weekend belongs to the Steelers and Taaffe: B-.

Somebody in slot 76 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while Michael Taaffe, the No. 53 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Makai Lemon
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. A real need, handled.
Pick53 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Olaivavega Ioane in the 53rd overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick76 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
You do not let a safety like Michael Taaffe reach No. 76 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick85 Rnd3 Malachi Fields
They let Malachi Fields come to them and pounced at the 85th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick99 Rnd3 Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette at slot 99 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121 Rnd4 Trinidad Chambliss
They did well to land Trinidad Chambliss in pick No. 121, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick135 Rnd4 Drew Allar
By-the-book stuff, Drew Allar at Round 4, Pick 35 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick159 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in pick 159 is fair value, right on his grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick213 Rnd6 J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick214 Rnd6 Isaac Smith
They took Isaac Smith at par in the 214th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick224 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Riley Mahlman. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick237 Rnd7 Jack Velling
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jack Velling at pick 237. A need, and now a little less of one.
