Jrock1970 DRAFTING FOR THEChargers

Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B

TradesB+
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Chargers. Every other box got a look, but edge rusher did not. The Chargers will head to camp with the same hole they walked in with. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
Getting Coker where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 10th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick27
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick37
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
They let Kool-Aid McKinstry come to them and pounced at No. 37. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 69, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick105
Rnd4
Christian Mahogany
Nothing to complain about; Christian Mahogany went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ainias Smith
No edge and no loss on Ainias Smith in the 140th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick181
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
By-the-book stuff, Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 181 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick225
Rnd7
Jalen Coker
The board had Jalen Coker higher than pick 225, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick253
Rnd7
Trente Jones
Fair-plus on Trente Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
