Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B
ValueC NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Steelers won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B.

The Steelers went off the board in a big way for Cornelius Johnson, 125 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with edge rusher, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In slot 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. More want than need.
Pick66 Rnd3 Ruke Orhorhoro
By-the-book stuff, Ruke Orhorhoro at pick No. 66 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick71 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went offensive lineman with Sedrick Van Pran while clear needs at edge rusher, running back and other spots sat open.
Pick78 Rnd3 Marist Liufau
They paid up for Marist Liufau at Round 3, Pick 14 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick85 Rnd3 Spencer Rattler
They liked Spencer Rattler enough to skip the value, taking him in the 85th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick87 Rnd3 Max Melton
Max Melton in pick 87 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick102 Rnd4 Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at the 102nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick190 Rnd6 Andrew Raym
Nothing to complain about; Andrew Raym went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick223 Rnd7 Cornelius Johnson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cornelius Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick242 Rnd7 Devin Leary
A reach on Devin Leary in pick No. 242; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
