Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB+ FutureB
The 49ers let Starks fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Malaki Starks, the No. 27 name on the board, stolen at the Round 3 slot. No fireworks, but a solid B.

If Buchanan pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Will Campbell
They did well to land Will Campbell in pick 14, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick33 Rnd2 Kenneth Grant
A tidy bit of business in the 33rd overall pick, where Kenneth Grant graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75 Rnd3 Darien Porter
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at the 75th pick, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick76 Rnd3 Malaki Starks
They barely believed it either: Malaki Starks still on the board at Round 3, Pick 12. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jack Bech
Jack Bech at No. 100 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
No edge and no loss on Cam Skattebo in pick No. 113; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick117 Rnd4 Oluwafemi Oladejo
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Oluwafemi Oladejo. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick138 Rnd4 Logan Brown
Logan Brown at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick147 Rnd5 Ty Robinson
A wild overpay on Ty Robinson in No. 147, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jake Briningstool
They went early on Jake Briningstool in the 160th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick174 Rnd5 Jaydon Blue
Jaydon Blue at pick 174 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick227 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
They left a pile of value on the table to take Teddye Buchanan this early at Round 7, Pick 11. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick232 Rnd7 Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson at the 232nd pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick249 Rnd7 Brandon Adams
Brandon Adams at slot 249 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Fair-plus on Jamon Dumas-Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
