Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB- TradesB- FutureB+
The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Emery Jones Jr. at the 100th overall pick is 22 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.

The Nolen steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Jahdae Barron
In pick 14 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Need was not the driver here.
Pick33 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
Value with a capital V on Walter Nolen in Round 2, Pick 1, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75 Rnd3 Shemar Turner
They liked Shemar Turner enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick100 Rnd3 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at pick No. 100 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick113 Rnd4 Terrance Ferguson
By-the-book stuff, Terrance Ferguson at the 113th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick117 Rnd4 Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at No. 117 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jackson Slater
A reach on Jackson Slater in pick No. 138; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147 Rnd5 Bhayshul Tuten
They paid sticker price for Bhayshul Tuten in No. 147, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick160 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at slot 160 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick171 Rnd5 CJ West
The board had cheaper options than CJ West at the 171st overall pick, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick204 Rnd6 Alijah Huzzie
Alijah Huzzie in Round 6, Pick 28 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick211 Rnd6 Caleb Rogers
Nice patience on Caleb Rogers, who had no business lasting to the Round 6 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick227 Rnd7 Jabbar Muhammad
Jabbar Muhammad in the 227th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick249 Rnd7 Kitan Crawford
Kitan Crawford at pick 249 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick252 Rnd7 Ty Hamilton
They took Ty Hamilton at par in the 252nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
