Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureC
The Chargers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jake Slaughter, 30 picks early at slot 209. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

The Harris steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The veteran additions, Marlon Humphrey chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In pick 21 they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick47 Rnd2 Patrick Payton
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Payton at Round 2, Pick 15 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick53 Rnd2 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in the 53rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick79 Rnd3 Donovan Edwards
No drama and no debate, Donovan Edwards went about where he belonged in slot 79. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111 Rnd4 Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. is a better player than the 111th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick143 Rnd5 Jaeden Roberts
They liked Jaeden Roberts enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 143. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick162 Rnd6 Denver Harris
Taking Denver Harris in Round 6, Pick 2 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick175 Rnd6 Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith in the 175th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick207 Rnd7 Chris Marshall
A big swing on Chris Marshall at the 207th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick209 Rnd7 Jake Slaughter
A real head-scratcher, Jake Slaughter in No. 209 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
